Be brilliant, play smart, and discover how to play craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
