Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
