The history of Craps dates back to a dice game known as Hazard, which dates all the way back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in Eightteen Thirteen. Hazard is believed to be a descendant of Azzahr, meaning ‘the die’ a game enjoyed by Arabs.

The game evolved as it traveled from the Arab regions to France and then England. By the early 1700s, formal rules for Hazard had been developed. France started playing the English version of Hazard and is assumed to have been imported to the new world by early French colonists. In the mid-18th century, when the British defeated the French in Canada, the French colonizers moved to Louisiana. Dice were enjoyed on river boats, casinos and wharfs and a modernized ‘US’ version of Craps was developed. The game moved west and is a well-known game that is competed in all over the U.S. and around the world.

The name ‘Craps’ is believed to be a French expression of the word crabs, which means two ones. There are two basic types of Craps that are gambled on-street Craps and bank Craps. Street caps, aptly named since it’s bet on the streets is where a player establishes a point and then attempts to make that point. The betting is made either for or against the shooter and somebody has to cover the wager for the game to continue.

In bank Craps, which is the common game, played in betting houses, the casino funds the game. The participants compete against the casino-the casino covers all of the wagers of all of the individuals. Craps was a very loved casino game but in the past 20 years had split itself and other games, like poker and black jack became even more well-known. However, Craps is observing a surge in recognition once again in web betting houses and in land based casinos.
