Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
