Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
