Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
