Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
