Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
