Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
