Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps.
