Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
