Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
