Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
