Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
