Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
