Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
