Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
