Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
