Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
