Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
