Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
