Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
