Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
