Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
