Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
