Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
