Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
