Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
