Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
