Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
