Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
