Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
