Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
