Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
