Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
