Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
