Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
