Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
