Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
