Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
