Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
