Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
