Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
