Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
