Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
