Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
