Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
