Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
